Assignment 1- Photo Montage

Greetings,

I thought a blog would be the most useful tool to post assignments and discuss the course content of CART 251, Web Insights. I'm already pondering an interesting project concerning interphases between human and pc, but in a more literal sense, which will explore sculpture and the computer... I'll be posting sketches soonish.

As for now, assignment one, the montage, will have to do. This assignment made me realize to which extent my skills need sharpening, because as far as all the interesting possibilites involving montage, I was very limited. As far as video and sound editing, I'm pretty much lost, though my 2d visual skills are up to par. So for now, until I acquire the knowledge I need to produce something more interactive, which is my goal for this semester, I decided to stick with traditional photo-montage.

The biggest problem I had with this assignment was not concerning the finding of material... actually, it was choosing which of the juicy images to exploit, because there are just so many socially disturbing images to chose from. (Like... GAWD, where do I even start?)

But since the important thing here is meaning though, I tried to make something simple but striking, without trying to make it look too obvious. Just something that makes you look twice, and think for a minute, or maybe even chuckle.

Of course, this deals with feminism, the internalized Male Gaze, and perhaps even awareness concerning eating disorders and unhealthy mediatic attitudes towards beauty. It's a rather personal issue for me, but shown in terms that I think everyone can relate to. Cheers. ^_-

(Disclaimer: Photos used not taken by me, but consequent image created by me, using Photoshop. Barbie belongs to Mattel, model belongs to whoever has the cash, yada yada yada. )
